The bulk of our lives (awake) will go to doing work. On the occasions that we get to take a break, we revel in that; though they are times we cherish, work is probably still on the back of our minds - what we have to do when we 'get back'. Ironically, its the distinction from work that makes play a great experience, yet damning the former to be a form of drugdery: the two are separate from each other!
At the interphase between them (which i now am at)- when the party's over and all - the state we're in is almost dreamlike. First reliving the fun moments, playing them over our heads like we would a video recording. Then there's a depressing pall that overcomes you, the kind of feeling that its time to snap back to reality. The more discipline you have, the faster it happens (you snap back), and the more efficient you are as a person.
why the drudge? why is it that it is so hard - if not on rare rare occasions - that we find people who enjoy what they do as work? I'll bring in a biblical perspective to things (if you don't mind, read on :)
In our faith, god created us fo his pleasure, to obey him and worship him, and to have a relationship with him. (I don't think any of this includes slogging our guts out in a stressful environment?) But a curse was put on man after sin entered the world. In chapter 3 of Genesis, it states: cursed is the ground because of you (your sin); through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. It will produce throns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground...
Doesn't that describe our condition today? Whenever we sow our efforts into something, very few things are smooth sailing. Obstacles never fail to turn up and things are never as easy or straightforward as they seem.
I think that in this respect, we're not fulfilling the purpose we were originally created for. by this i mean that hard work and toil wasn't on god's mind when he created man.
As christians, our response certaintly cannot be antiwork! But going into everything, to try our best to keep a sweet spirit in doing things, always having the joy of christ within, and doing the best we can for our king. Thats what I've been trying to do and i think it brings a smile to his face.
On saturday I went to the beach, went for yf, then had a stayover. So i guess i've been mucking around for awhile now and its time to do some tutorial :)
